Public service announcement from 7 year player. Take it as you will.

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 03:36 PM PST

This is a PSA from your friendly neighborhood nobody. I have been playing this game for 7 years. I have seen many overhauls and changes over the course of those years. When they changed how item level/gear score works, and up to max level from 60 to 70, I was there. There was mass spread frustration. Eventually, people figure it out the changes, and figured out that overall it was an improvement. Quickly thereafter builds started being released, and the market settled from the panic buy/sell pandemic. When they did it again in a big way, changing how every class and role fundamentally worked and raised the level cap to 80, I was there. Again, people went bonkers, market was crazy, a lot of players quit. Those of us who stuck through it, figured it out. a lot of us are nostalgic for the way it was before, but I feel like a lot of us realized that the direction that they went was an overall improvement. Well they're changing things again now, and I'm seeing much the same pattern again. Give it a couple of weeks. Let the dust settle. Don't freak out. He will be rapidly pushing out patches and tweaks over the course of the coming weeks. there should be a major update in the next 24 hours. Definitely major changes for the better within the next 7 days. By the end of the month, the numbers wizards will have done their thing, and will be releasing build pages and meta videos online. We will return to the status quo, ultimately nonetheless for where. Ultimately the system will be easier to understand, and easier to build a less cookie cutter and more varying set of characters within. With simplification and rebalancing comes viability of choice. this quite capable of being a good thing. We will also have more room to become more powerful, More options on how to get there, and a more solidly understandable idea of where we are. I realize that things look crazy, and I realize not flaming the game is an unpopular stance right now. This probably will not get any attention as it is a long post that is taking an unpopular stance. That said, it is my opinion, as a long-standing end-gamer, that the changes, though shocking confusing to many, are largely for the benefit of the community. Stay calm, and good luck.

I really love this game, but...

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 08:16 PM PST

I don't want to have to redo my character every year or so. I don't want to run numbers. I want to play. I want the time and money I spent making my character viable to be reflected in game play. They have sucked the joy out of the game, at least for me. But, thank you for a great game. I'll check back when the new mod comes out. I don't expect to return to the amount of time I currently spend in game. I remember how it took 2 mods to recover from the last major change. Have fun, all.

Devs : how to fix the problems

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 04:06 PM PST

    A - Communication

Streams are nice and all, but we need to be able to understand where you want to go and when that will happen. It's okay to postpone stuff : if you're not ready, you're not. People can understand. But it's not okay to have a big update like this with less than 1 day to prepare, especially when it's clear that the changes are not ready on Preview.

Also check the info you are communicating in official posts : the false advertising on the Expedition Pack of Fairy Finds shall not happen again.

B - Players struggling in leveling areas (PS : and random queues)

That's an urgent problem that is easy to fix with better balance on the monster stats. You're working on it, and it will be solved quickly (at least everyone hopes so). Reducing monster Damage and HP will solve the issue. It will be fine eventually, but we could have avoided all the drama entirely if you had play-tested the game properly on Preview.

C - The new stat system

The MAJOR problems with the new stat system are not that hard to fix :

    • 1 item level = 15 stat points : this should be true for every single item in the game. Currently, it's not. Artifacts give less stats, Mount Combat Powers give 0 ratings, and there may be problems with companions (at least there are discrepancies between what's written on certain companion equipment, like the Fierce Talisman of the Companion +4, and what they actually give) and bolster... The new system can only work if 1 item level always give 15 stat points.

    • Stat diversity : all of the stats should be available on equipment/enchantments/insignias. There are almost no way to boost the new main stats, which heavily impacts healers. Because Divinity/Soulweave Regeneration is tied to Forte, a veteran healer, once equipped with everything that gives Forte, will only see their resource regeneration decrease as their TIL goes up. Veterans will be healed less than newer players, and they will be able to heal more, resist control effects and have controls that last longer, if they remove gear in scaled content. We need the new stats to be available, otherwise it makes no sense, especially for healers who will have to gear down in scaled content to be efficient. It's not too late to adjust the mod 20 gear and to give us a couple of new enchantments/insignias.

D - Better drop rates for mounts and companions in dungeons

You really killed the drop rates with mod 19. It makes the game really difficult for newer players. It's fun to try to collect all of the mounts and companions in the game. There needs to be ways to get them. It's expensive enough to upgrade them. Making them drop more often would feel much better for everyone and wouldn't break the economy. People could actually upgrade more companions and mounts if they were more available.

    E - Save the economy

The only way to save the economy of the game is to create new AD sinks. An easy and effective way is to simply put stuff that people want (account wide companions and mounts/wards/scrolls of life) available for sale in the Wondrous Bazaar rather than in the Zen Market. People would buy Zen to exchange them for AD, in order to afford the desired items. Also having more cosmetics in the Zen Market would be a good move. That's the only way to save the Zen exchange and making everyone happy.

F - Make healing more active and rewarding

Mod 19 has been the least fun mod for me. Healing Word certainly does the job, but I feel like a healbot. The new mechanic just doesn't work, for many reasons, the most important being that applying the mark and healing are on the same button and that makes it very unpractical. Also dying removes the mark and it's almost impossible to put it again during a fight... It's just a very bad mechanic. With the buff to healing potions, healing has to be better, more rewarding. It would also be nice to have more relevant buffs or debuffs, to offer more support, rather than just healing.

    G - Generate your tooltips/preview screens automatically

Making them by hand is a waste of time and creates discrepancies and errors.

    Conclusion

I'll be honest, I hate the way the game is going. But everything is not totally lost. The changes needed to make it better are not that complicated, at least they are easier than changing every little thing in the game.

I'll end on a positive note : bonding runestones had to go away, and that will make the game immensely better for newer level 80 players.

Also, while the new stat system is currently very poorly implemented, it has potential, and can actually be great for the future. Note that, to make progression relevant for veterans, you will have to give us ways to increase our TIL by at least 10% every new mod, otherwise it will feel pointless to farm the new mod. TIL is the new Power stat, so it has to increase that way to keep people interested.

If you fix these problems, then we will be able to move forward with a better and more robust system, and hope for the future. It is currently very needed. I don't want to regret working more than 6 months full time on this game (yes, that's how much work I've put into my website) for almost nothing...

Rushed Combat Rework Patch Hits Neverwinter Live PC Server And Faces Community Backlash - Article on the combat changes

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 04:49 AM PST

Can someone give me an honest ELI5 of the combat patch with its pros and cons? No angry rants about it or anything please I’m just trying to learn how to play as a new-ish player

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 04:45 PM PST

The recent changes...and all the angry/confused players

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 04:18 AM PST

The game is full of angry and confused players right now.

    • The situation fine for the first 20 levels or so. You start with 50% everywhere, and that is more than enough to get through everything at the start. (And, yes, I did really test this over on preview - took a character from level 1. There was one tough fight near the start (Karzov), but that's it.) No real complaints there.
    • The situation is also not too bad for players with, say, 50K+ IL and a full set of mythic mounts and companions. Yes, combat is annoyingly slow - critters may take 50-200% longer to kill than before, and for fights that were already long (like the Avernus T3 hunt) the current situation is just absurd, but it's not unreasonably hard....just tedious and less fun than before.
    • Those really suffering are those between those extremes.....this includes mid-level players with maybe just one good companion, one or two epic mounts, a handful of mediocre artifacts, limited insignia, enchants and runestones. This also includes those who hurried to level 80, drove around Avernus to get treasure maps, and think they have good gear, but their IL is just 27K or so. Those are the people getting slaughtered.

So, what can be done to fix this? I honestly don't know. I just consider the design fundamentally flawed, and there is no easy fix. However, there are some things that could be done to improve some aspects of the changes.

    • I have to admit I do not have much sympathy for people who skip content and then complain that they are not strong enough, but on this subject, I think the game is going in the wrong direction, by discouraging progression through hard work. I have called this the "Marxist approach ", but the goal is to reduce the differences between the "have" and "have not" players. This is the wrong thing to do. Many players are motivated by progression - enjoy making their characters stronger, and the game is taking that away.....demotivated players are not likely to spend money or even to stick around. One example of this is the "0.2% per level" for the boons, and the reduction in the guild boons. The message that players are getting is that their hard work is irrelevant - all that matters how much money you spend. My recommendation would be to increase the boons to 1% per level and double the guild boon points. This would send a clear message that you are expected to play the various campaigns....not just skip them.
    • You need to work on your reward/effort ratio. It was bad - it is worse now, in particular for the content that the "mid-level" players can do. People now have to work harder, and spend twice the time they spent before for the same pathetic rewards as before. Not good, not motivating. Maybe triple the drop rate for companions for a while to give more people stuff they really need?
    • Many players enjoy the feeling of being powerful. Take something like the small instances in Dread Ring, Phantasmal Fortress and such. The very first time I did them they felt tough. Later they felt trivially easy. Now....well, things that previesly died with a single hit now require two. It's just more tedious than before but no more fun and no more rewarding. This is not something anybody wanted or asked for, but a clear example of why the players think the developers are totally out of touch with the playerbase. You really need to find out what motivates your players.....maybe, well, do an honest survey ?
    • It is too easy to get "to the top" just by spending money...I used to say "The game is not P2W - it is more like pay-for-convenience or pay-to-avoid-grind.", but there is less and less you have to grind for and more and more you have to buy, which kind-of makes it difficult to justify the previous statement.

So, can the game be salvaged? I don'r know....but I have never before heard as many players say "I'm downloading ESO" as yesterday. Something needs to be done.....and quickly, before the player numbers drop too much.

    Before and After

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 04:25 AM PST

I'm writing this before playing the new update and hearing everyone's opinion on the new mobs and combat stats. So far I am scared. Hoping on it now. Wish me luck. (Saving as a draft btw)

Expectations: Maybe a bit of combat difference, but still the same game really. I'm hoping it's not too much of a difference from before, I did see that mobs were OP now and player was nerfed, but I hope that was over exaggerated at least.

    *UPDATE*

What the hell were they thinking...? Checked the character stats, my power was 22,000+ and now it's only 2,000? I was in Rothe Valley, and to kill the Slayers it would have taken me 2-3 power effects as a wizard, now it takes 7-8 roughly? I can understand if they wanted to make the game a bit more challenging, but lowering player stats..? I feel like a level 40 in a level 51-53 area despite being 63... That was the only thing I had time to really check because I'm in online classes, but for a quick summary.

Summary: In Rothe Valley, to kill a slayer, it takes me as a wizard 2 sometimes 3 power attacks to kill. It now takes 6-7, but when I spawned in, it took 3 people (including myself) to kill both a warrior and Slayer quick, that still was more time than it would've originally took to kill one by myself... They messed up hard. It feels like being in a higher level you haven't unlocked yet (to me at least). I really hope they fix this as it hard annoyed so many player. Again, if they wanted to make it a bit challenging (because I have seen people say the game is too easy) I would understand, but I doubt my fighting abilities now after this update. I also just unlocked Mount Hotenow and I have to do the Shadowfire (i think that's the name) quest and I did it before with a full party, and we found it fun...now if we go to complete it, I highly doubt we'll enjoy it.

    UPDATE 2

okay what the fuck...level 63 in Neverdeath graveyard, getting destroyed by anything and everything...no matter the enemy, 4 hits lowers my health halfway or near enough to their...it's a level 25-30 area...i'm 63...where is the logic? if i level 63 can barely make it out how can a level 25??

    Companion bolster

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 06:47 PM PST

So I'm a PS4 player and I'm wondering what I should be doing with my companions with the new change in mind.

Im a DPS using an epic augment companion but will mythic be enough with the update or do I have to have other mythic creatures?

I only have 1 creature currently and kind of hate that they split the bolster by type.

Y'All Got Any More Of Them

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 04:47 PM PST

This combat rework is actually really nice, but some things need to be addressed sooner rather than later.

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 09:13 AM PST

I'm going to go ahead and keep this post short and sweet. The combat rework is a GOOD thing, unfortunately, some things just did not pan out mathematically which is all I want to address here. You will see what I strongly suggest in changing, why I suggest changing it and the impact of doing so.

    • Enchantments/Insignias Enchantments/Isignias cannot be WAI right now - they work more like stat redistribution in a zero sum game rather than a stat buff; at higher IL, enchants/insignias cause you to LOSE stats whilst gaining a near negligible weapon damage/HP gain. They are by far the most expensive and most burdensome part of a character to upgrade and are often the last thing people touch unless economically efficient.

Suggestion: Reduce maximum IL gain from rank 15 to 150 IL. Increase base HP & base weapon damage by 10% to account for stat loss due to a lower IL cap.

    • Bolster Bolstering is waaaaaaaaay too effective and way too steep of a cost. The scaling on bolstering is an issue, not the bolster itself. This patch destroyed alternate characters and the ability to maintain them. This patch also destroyed the fresh 80 progression and absolutely wrecked their group efficiency with a carrot on a stick that can not be seen.

    Suggestion: Re-work bolster stats. Common 1%. Uncommon 2%. Rare 3%. Epic 5%. Legendary 7%. Mythic 10%.

    • Power This stat is woefully oversaturated on gear and leads to instances where I have to equip lower IL stuff to gain effectiveness. The buff from some of these items is massively inconsistent as well - some buff your gear rating, some buff "other contributions". Blanket 40% reduction in power gain from items - ensure ALL items power proc is put into the "other contributions" category.

    • Armor/Weapon enchantments Terror and Feytouched primarily, but also works with any enchant that has a proc chance associated with a Daily. Both of these need to have a cooldown reduction and need to work on instances where Dailies are not useful, available or cannot be used on a target. Reduce tooltip amount by 60%. Reduce cooldown to 4 second. Both items activate on encounter powers now. Triple effectiveness and proc chance (when applicable) when used on a daily.

    • Enemy Combat Advantage This mechanic is actually fine in implementation, but the players ability to deal with excessive CA isn't available at the moment which makes a lot of content downright impossible because well built DPS are getting gibbed by boss AOEs. The CA multiplier itself needs to be reduced to raise the effectiveness of Awareness. I didn't do enough testing to find out what the multiplier is, but it's too high.

Uping crit and combat advantage on ranger seems to do little...

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 03:41 PM PST

Went on test server and maxed basically every companion that had critical strike and combat advantage to mythic, and basically it had little effect on my stats. So obviously the system is not working as intended.

    Just...shaking my head.

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 01:35 AM PST

So. Yesterday before I hopped off. I was 19,241 item level. Been grinding to get to Avernus. I come back. I see there's and update. I do it. I log in. I browse my stats trying to decide where I'm heading off today to grind. Well what did I find. I got bumped up to 24k item level. Wow golly I think this is awesome. Let's head over to Avernus right now. Well what do you now. Instead of being a few hundred points away from being just strong enough to start the campaign. Now I'm a few thousand short. So. Yeah. New update made the game grindier. Enemies are godtier strong and seem to melt everyone around me. My appearance items seem to disappear when they feel like it and need repurchasing. I can only do the lowest tiered randoms now so no more happy grinding in trials I guess. So. How's the update been for you? I personally feel it sucks.

    Question about barbie 'Overpenetration' feat

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 01:36 PM PST

There's a class feat called Overpenetration which now says if you have power and accuracy capped you get a flat +5% damage. But does 'capped' mean they both have to be higher or equal to my TIL (50%) or boosted all the way to (90%). Cuz there's no dam way I'm getting them both to 90%...
